Sabbath Queen follows Rabbi Amichai Lau Lavie’s remarkable 20 year journey from drag queen rebel to rabbinical student to spiritual innovator as he reimagines religion and ritual for the 21st century. Founder of Lab Shul, an everybody friendly, God optional, artist driven pop up congregation, Lau Lavie draws on a lineage that includes 39 generations of Orthodox rabbis, including Israel’s chief rabbis, while forging a radically new path. Blending intimate verité footage with decades of archival material, the film traces his personal and spiritual evolution as he challenges tradition, identity, and faith in a rapidly changing world. Full of surprising, profound, and often humorous turns, Sabbath Queen wrestles with what it means to be human right now.
